Gamblers visit monk for good luck
Recently, our PPMG reporter team decided to follow a rumour to a local forest on Soi Nonghin of Nongprue, where it has been said that hundreds of lottery gamblers gather at a spirit house by a banyan tree which stands next to a dead golden take tree.
The reason that so many hopeful people gather at this precise location is because it is believed that the area has been possessed by a very powerful spirit since ancient times and this spirit has helped many lottery gamblers to get lucky on the 1st and the 16th of the month.
More than 100 people were found to have gathered around the temporary shelter of a monk who has traveled to this remote spot from Udonthani Province. As the monk sits and meditates, the gamblers look for hints of lucky numbers everywhere; from the trees to the monk’s water bowl, using candles, torches and even powder to extract their clues.
The idea may sound absurd, but not to local Nongplalai resident Miss Kanchana Jantaranont. The 37 year old woman told our team that she had once won the lottery after following the instructions of a female spirit who came to her in her dream telling her to bring food to the precise spot at 11:59 am. When she followed the dreams wishes she found the monk in the middle of the forest and she offered the food to him. She dedicated the merit to the female spirit who led her there and the very next time she played the lottery, she won.
