BEGGAR GANGS AT LARGE

Beggar gangs traced and people warned not to fall into traps
22nd March, police from 4 Sections including Department of Special Investigation (DSI) led by its Director Pol. Maj. Jatuporn Arun-reuk-ta-win, Chonburi Tourist Police led by Superintendent Pol. Lt. Col. Piyapong Ensarn, Immigration Police and Pattaya Police completed the Beggar Suppression Operation after having strong evidence to believe that the majority of beggars in the city are not Thai and were brought into the Kingdom through illegal agents.
From this operation, 17 beggars including 10 children were detained with 4,997.75 Baht in total found on them and all of Cambodian nationality.
Many of the detained were female beggars with babies and have often been deported before.
This confirmed the fact that they were brought into the Kingdom by professional criminal agents of which the police hope to trace using information gained from the beggars.
Thai people and tourists are requested by police NOT to give any money to the beggars as they are all part of illegal gangs from neighbouring countries.
